It’s hard to believe that 2019 is quickly drawing to a close. In preparation for the new year, some have asked for recommendations for devotionals. Here are a few recommendations:
New Morning Mercies– Paul David Tripp
“Mornings can be tough. Sometimes, a hearty breakfast and strong cup of coffee just aren’t enough. Offering more than a rush of caffeine, best-selling author Paul David Tripp wants to energize you with the most potent encouragement imaginable: the gospel.
Forget “behavior modification” or feel-good aphorisms. Tripp knows that what we really need is an encounter with the living God. Then we’ll be prepared to trust in God’s goodness, rely on his grace, and live for his glory each and every day.”
Morning and Evening– Charles Spurgeon
“For over one hundred years, Christians have gotten up and gone to bed with Charles Spurgeon’s devotional Morning and Evening as a companion. With a reading to begin and end each day throughout the year, you will come to appreciate Spurgeon’s emphasis on the importance of abiding in Christ and meditating on God’s Word. His wisdom and counsel provide a timeless guide through the trials and triumphs of the year. The richness of his biblical understanding offers readers a look into the heart of one of England’s foremost pastors and enduring Christian authors.”
Holiness Day by Day– Jerry Bridges
“Do you want your daily devotional to have more substance? Then you will appreciate this one-year devotional from Navigator author Jerry Bridges. Each entry has been carefully selected from his best writings, connecting with you on a deeper level and encouraging personal discovery. This quick daily read is full of inspiration, commitment, and transformation for men and women to grow in spiritual maturity.”
Grace Untamed
“God’s grace liberates us. When we live under grace, we are free to risk and dream and love. But most of us still define our identity by what we do rather than who we are as sons and daughters of the King.
Containing 60 daily devotions written by some of the leading Christian voices of our day, Grace Untamedwill challenge and equip you to live in the scandalous freedom of God’s grace. Prepare to drink deep from the wellspring of God’s untamed and unending grace.”
Daily Readings for your Spiritual Journey– J.I Packer
“Named by Time magazine as one of the 25 most influential evangelicals in America, Oxford-trained theologian and author J. I. Packer has helped Christians around the world discover the wonder, glory, and joy of knowing God personally. Now you can have the riches of God’s character in a daily devotional.”
Comforts from the Cross– Elyse Fitzpatrick
“Many women don’t always find solace in their relationship with Christ because they don’t see how his life, death, and resurrection connect with daily pressures and frustrations.
Comforts from the Cross provides bite-sized readings to remind women of their place in Christ and of his love in the midst of their busy lives. Elyse Fitzpatrick shows how gospel truths such as justification, sanctification, and redemption can refresh women’s souls every day. These five-minute celebrations of the gospel relieve readers of legalistic condemnation and empower them for joyful obedience.”
Walking with God Day by Day: 365 Daily Devotional Selections– Martyn Lloyd-Jones
Of course you know I have to include some Lloyd-Jones 🙂
Comforts From Romans– Elyse Fitzpatrick
“Although we may go to bed at night believing the gospel, we wake up every morning needing to hear it again. Yet most of us don’t have time to dive into a lengthy commentary on the book of Romans―the book Paul wrote in order to showcase the glorious riches of the gospel.
Thankfully seasoned counselor and author Elyse Fitzpatrick makes the message of Romans readily accessible in 31 devotional-like chapters on what Martin Luther called “the very purest Gospel.” Perfect for even the busiest of us, Elyse helps us grasp the practicality of the gospel message and experience the deep comforts articulated in the book of Romans.”
